Hello

I'm interested in learning to surf, are there any schools or teachers out there who would run weekend tutoring? I currently live in Hiroshima and my surfing experience consists of summers of body boarding as a wee kid, off the North Coast of Ireland and the occasional dip off Scotland.

Help?

Cheers.

Hi Pepperpot,
It is a long way to the beach from Hiroshima, so I hope you are keen!
A couple of suggestions for you if you are motivated enough to come to Shikoku. I know of 2 surfing schools, both of them in Kochi.
Pavilion Surf Shop offer lessons in Toyo on the south-east coast and Hata Surf Dojo on the south coast. http://www.outdoorjapan.com/TO/main.html
If you'd like more info. feel free to contact me further.

Hey man, I'm in the same situation as you. In mid-April though I'm heading out to Ikumi beach (Tokushima, Shikoku) to take two days of surf lessons from a local shop. I got hooked up via a guy who runs a little surf shack in town. His name's Ten, he's real friendly. Here's an article on his place: http://www.kansaiscene.com/2005_09/html/getaway.shtml His email is tens@arion.ocn.ne.jp (the email listed on his site is inaccurate BTW)

Once again, its a little far from Hiroshima but make a trip of it. I'll post about it here after I get back.

best of luck!

I just took a lesson from my friend, YAMAMOTO Tsutomu, who runs his own surf and sea kayak shop/school in Chiba. He speaks English and has over 10 years experience in both kayaking and surfing. His shop, Saltys Surf and Sport, is about 2 hours from Tokyo (by train, bus, or ferry) and offers clean waves, no crowds, awesome sushi, and an incredible atmosphere. http://www.saltys.info/
