It starts to cool down water temp wise in Japan around that time, but the waves are generally consistent unlike summer. Chiba is a good place if you are near Tokyo-you can rent boards at any of the shops around Ichinomiya and there are a plethora of decent surf breaks on one nice long stretch of coast. (check out OJ's Surfing Chiba special in this year's summer edition, you can see it online)
If you have a car (maybe look into hiring one) you can drive down to Minami Boso and surf along the way-Hebara, Maruki, Wada, Heizara...each break gets good on the right swell and wind conditions.

Shonan is not a favorite of mine particularly for its lack of decent swell and over crowded waters, that being said it is also close to Tokyo and thus convenient.

Further north of Chiba, Ibaraki, Fukushima and up to Sendai all have quality consistent with no crowds but the water is colder up there this time of year.

Go south, and you can surf down in Omaezaki in Shizuoka and get a nice view of Mt Fuji on the way.

The islands off tokyo are fantastic, Niijima, Ooshima, etc, and then Shikoku (Kaifu river mouth is a great punchy right hander that gets hollow).

Kyushu is of course great, the Dome is no longer in action, closed its doors for good this time.

And then you have Tanegashima, Okinawa, Amamioshima, etc.

That should get you excited!

If you plan on a surf only trip here, which gives you the freedom to explore and check out the REAL Japan in some of the more rural areas, then I suggest renting a car and even bringing your own board and wetsuit.

Hope this helps!

Angie
