Hello everybody

I used to play (8 years ago!!) with the Yoyogi Bears every Sunday in Yoyogi Park. Does anybody know whether that is still going on?

Otherwise, would it be possible to join the Futagotamagawa Sunday games once in a while? What level do you play (I haven't played for ages....)? Is there a map (the link which was posted on Jan 6th is a dead end)?

Cheers

8 years ago! so what was it like "back in the day"? did you play in geta?

there's still pick-up at yoyogi on sundays, but the two groups i know of are called gazaiban and fukahire.

come to KUJI (not futako-tamagawa, but close) for pick-up anytime, all levels of experience are welcome.

doug, could you post a link to your map here?

I suppose it wasn't much different from today unless the official rules have changed.....
There was quite a good turnout every Sunday so it was always loads of fun to play (even though the park officials dropped by every once in a while and the game ceased until they were out of sight again)

What exactly is "geta"? Some kind of Ultimate League or Tournament? Some of us participate in Tournaments but nothing regular.

Please let me know more about KUJI, when and where, so I could drop by when I have time.

Thanks for your help!

Sorry for the late response. Here's the map to Kuji. We typically play on Sunday around 2pm, but check the board for updates and location changes.

There's also weeknight ultimate one day most weeks; Hisa's thread has the details on dates and locations.

Hey Moose, I used to play ultimate back in the day when the game was every Sunday afternoon at Yoyogi Koen, rain or shine.

When I returned to Canada back around 1998 there was a great group of people playing on Sundays and in some tourneys. I've stayed in touch with some and lost touch with others.

Anyway, I created a Facebook group to try to reconnect with them and anyone else that played with "the Bears" in Yoyogi. Please feel free to join the group and pass this message and URL along http://tinyurl.com/6s837u

Thanks. Chris

Hello Moose and ChrisB,

Apparently Yoshio's joking tone didn't come across in his post. Geta are the traditional Japanese sandals with the toe thong, although I'm sure someone could make the word into a good acronym for a tournament. Smiler

I played on Sunday afternoons in Yoyogi Park with Fukahire from about December 2003 until late last year. I have some vague impression that they were the successors to the Bears. During my early days out in the park there was a whole different crew than there is today. Perhaps you knew the former captain Ma-kun? He, er, "retired" and about half of the squad left with him, so I doubt you will recognize any of the Japanese players. A few old timer expats from the US are still playing there though.

I'm sure there's still a good turnout there, mostly Japanese, but I would strongly suggest you try out the pick-up game in Kuji as well for purposes of comparison. Depending on where you live it might be farther, but the field surface is far superior, as is the quality of play, I would like to think.

Either way, welcome back to the Tokyo ultimate fold!
