Here's a quick update of the action I saw yesterday......from an email I wrote to Little Jay "the bull and Canadian Idol" Bonitsky
Wow! that Jpn / USA men's semi was a fantastic game. I saw most of it.....arrived when it was 6-6 and watched the game with Bruno. There was one point where Japan had it on the goal line and were trying to get it in. US had amazing D and Japan had amazing swing throws and dumps....they must have made 30 throws before they were able to punch it in for the score. The rest of the game was great, but Japan made just one or two mistakes on offense and allowed the US defensive line to pot two goals and the states were up by 3 points instead of just one. Japan tried to battle back and got one point from the defensive unit, but the US was too strong and held on for the win. Still there were enough turnovers that either team could have won the game. The best part was the spirit in the game. Both teams were congratulating the other team for their plays, there weren't too many fouls called and all disputes were handled really well. At the end of the game there was a big huddle with both teams and guys hugging eachother talking with eachother, trading jerseys...that kind of thing. Apparently the mixed game between Canada and the Us was the opposite with a lot of bad spirit and stupid competitive agro play. But I didn't see it. My favorite matches to watch have been in the Master's division between Can and the US. They played in regular play on Tuesday and then last night in the final. Amazing Ultimate, spirit and layouts by old dudes!! Seeing Jim Pernella throwing a risky blade into the endzone to a tightly marked receiver and being successful for the score was a key moment. Also a couple of times were the defense knocked a disc away only to have a second receiver make an amazing dive to keep it alive and score. Some fantastic plays. US took the lead and won in the second half, but again this could have gone either way. Fantastic play, and I was ringside with Rob, Bruno and some stoned hippy who knew nothing about Ultimate but kept buying rounds of beer for everyone around us....epic game! I am a bit slow going and nursing my hangover. Have to walk Lola the dog before heading up to the fields again. Unfortunately I have missed Japan and the UK in the Bronze game, but I should catch most of the women (Japan will probably spank the US....they are so much stronger than anyone else out there.) Then Japan Canada in the mixed and US Canada in the open final. It is going to be another day of great ultimate! I think all the games are being shown on Ultivillage.com. You have to pay $7 or something like that, but worth a look. Oh, and apparently there is an interview with Fun Captain Rob on the Blockstack.tv daily videocasts...not sure if it is from the Wed show or the Thursday show, but it is there. www.blockstack.tv B B Ultimate Ultimate Ultimate!!!! |
