I'm taking the rest of this year off to do as I please and was just simply wondering if there what kind of jobs I could expect to find in Japan. I realise english teaching is a big deal but I'd really prefer to find something else.

If anyone could help me by giving me a bit of direction, that'd be awesome. Maybe you've seen a post for some out of the way strange job or know of a friend in a different field of employment.

Thanks a million Wink

The rafting companies are always looking for people to help out if you have experience there. A lot of lodges and inns in ski and outdoor areas will take people on for the season as well. Some just come on a holiday visa and work under the table. You can always teach English on the side as well. Sounds like a good way to spend the year Wink

I think Todd needs a hug and a little lovin'.

As Tom Robbins said:

"There are rich ***holes, and there are poor ***holes. Personally, I prefer rich ***holes, 'cuz at least the rich ***holes can buy their own drink."

ANother question though.. Are there any places of preference or places I should totally avoid?? I've noticed from the message board a lot of you guys seem to be living in or around Tokyo.

This board is fantastic for all things outdoors in Japan, *except* jobs. As previously mentioned, there are better places to begin a job search. Gaijinpot & jobsinjapan were good suggestions. For years, very few jobs have been posted on this site. For whatever reason, the other sites have a huge advantage in job listings. Nothing at all against this site, it's tops for sportsmen in Japan. No need to get bent outta shape for what seemed like a friendly suggestion...

Hey Beach, I had a friend who got a job at an inn in Nagano and worked there for the winter. The pay sucked but he got free room and board and a snowboard pass. If you can teach skiing some places might hire you as well. You can also get a job pouring beers with a tourist visa most of the time. A lot of freelance designers out there as well but takes a bit to get some work. Anyway, lots of people are from Tokyo, but in any of the big cities (Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, Fukuoka) it's pretty easy to find a job unless you are completely useless....which I'm sure you're not Wink

Hey Mike, yeah, you're right, except the guy wasn't so friendly so I'm glad he's left the board. Anyway, the message board should get more active again. Too bad they lost all those messages because there thousands of good posts to go back to....I'm sure they were pissed.
