greetings everyone. i'm new to this forum but not new to outdoor pursuits in Japan. I've been to every prefecture and have climbed 85 of the hyakumeizan, so if anyone needs advice, then ask away.

If anyone is heading to Hokkaido there is a guy there called the Hokkaido Bush Pig who has over 10 years of guiding treks on the big island and I haven't met anyone so far who knows Hokkaido the trails and mountains better than him.
I've heard from a few people who know him that he has done every peak, mountain and route in Hokkaido in summer and winter .
check out his website Hokkaido Hikes or contact him here on this board.
He has helped me out on a few occasions but there are some places he likes to keep to himslef.

Hi, Wes.

I'm relatively new to hiking. Last year I hiked up Ontake with some new Hawkins boots. The boots are fine on level terrain, but they gave me trouble, particularly on the way down. What would you recommend as good hiking boots, or do the ones I have need more breaking in perhaps?

I've heard that Hawkins boots take a long time to break in, but they're comfy once you reach that point. One blog mentioned it took 500 miles of hiking to break in! There are lots of hiking boots out on the market, and I truly think the best ones are the ones that fit your feet comfortably. I've got really wide feet and my right foot is one shoe size smaller than my left, so I'm probably not the best person to ask. Waterproof boots are a must in Japan, but even Gore tex boots will lose their water repellency over time in Japan's extremely wet climate.

Thanks. I haven't given up on the Hawkins yet. Will take your advice and try to wear them in some more.

Hi Wes -

Where in Japan do recommend for some easy to moderate hiking in early to mid April with cool weather (warm/cool days, cold nights), sunshine, excellent scenery, and high-end accommodation nearby. We will have our one-year-old daughter in a backpack so nothing too challenging but still good exercise. Cherry blossoms optional , but would be a nice bonus! Many thanks!

Hey wes,

I am new to this forum and also to hiking, but I am planning on hiking and camping by myself, in Gunma towards the end of March (in a week or so).

Would you by any chance know what kind of conditions I should expect (still lots of snow or no? bears coming out of hibernation?? yipes), and also if you have any recommendations for good camping grounds and hiking trails?

I am also planning on checking out some of the famous onsen while im there.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks!
