Hokkaido Earth Friendship 9 day Alpine Summer Trek into Daisetsu-Zan National Park.

The Hokkaido Bush Pig and Koichi Nakatani AKA The Sonic Surfer have teamed up to put together this one of a kind trek to promote friendship and peace. Join us and a mixes group of Japanese and non-Japanese as we spend 9 magical days from (mt)Asahi-dake to (mt)Furano-dake. This trek is normally done in 5 to 6 days if you plan to go straight from (mt)Asahi-dake to (mt)Furano-dake ( the lonely planet route ). But we will camp a couple of days at one campsite to do a couple of side day hikes to some of Daisetsu-zan secrets, like natural hot spring pools and a fantastic peak which are not on the lonely planet route and only a local guide like The Hokkaido Bush Pig can show you.

Koichi Nakatani
is walking Japan and planting trees along the way to promote peace in the world. He is also involved with the EARTHWALKER project.

Living in Japan for a little over ten years, I had always wanted to visit Hokkaido to see the natural beauty. However, I did not want to do it the typical Japanese tour way. For those of you that have not been on a Japanese tour, remember back to the days of your elementary school field trips. Everything is very structured and doesn’t encourage any type of exploration. The Hokkaido Bush Pig (HBP for short) setup a special trip for us on very short notice and he did it with style. From the moment that I met the HBP, I could tell that he was very comfortable living in Japan and that he would be a great guide. He picked us up early in the morning and as requested had some cold local brew waiting for us. From the meeting point, we traveled through the city to the coast. Along the beach road we stopped for lunch at a local seafood restaurant. This was my first experience of how fresh and delicious the food is in Hokkaido. From there we continued along the shoreline taken in the sights. We stopped at a sake brewery to sample some of the products and wound up sampling them all. After that it was off to the mountains. Upon our arrival at the foot of Asahi-dake we checked in to the onsen. The onsen is a good example of why I like Japan. Corporation owned onsens surrounded the onsen, but yet the mom and pop companies still thrive. We had a dinner of freshly picked mountain vegetables, meat, and fish. After dinner the owner and some of the employees had a couple of bottles of sake with us. The morning came o’ so early after a night of drinking. However, I made it to the top of Asahi-dake and truly enjoyed the experience. We took a different route home and I was amazed by the abundance of wild flowers that high above the tree line. We stopped at a natural onsen to soak our feet and were filmed by a NHK camera crew that was filming a documentary. After our day of hiking, we stopped by the onsen for a quick dip and then it was back to Sapporo. Upon our arrival to Sapporo we checked into our hotel and then it was off for a night on the town. HBP was not only an expert bushman, but he also was very keen in the city. The Hokkaido Bush Pig has my strongest recommendation for anyone looking to have a memorable time in Hokkaido

I went on a long trek with him last year and it was one of the best parts of my visit to Japan. He is a very friendly guy who loves Hokkaido and a great guide. I wish I could go on this trek.

I have one question . Will you be planting tree on this trek ?

Lisa.

We won't be planting trees on the trek but I think Koichi is going to do something at the Ainui festival and maybe at one or two schools after the trek. He is now up north and walking his way to our meeting point of the trek which he should be at in 3 weeks time.
