i was looking into the route through the alps from Tokyo to Kyoto. Would that be a good thing to do in April?

If so can anyone recommend some good literature on the routes or websites?

Or can anyone recommend another nice hiking/camping trip for april in and around the tokyo area?

I can't wait!

thank you!

Ryan,

The Alps are inaccessible in April, as snow will still be falling. Unless you've got an ice axe, crampons and winter hiking experience, I'd head for the lower elevations. I live in Osaka, so I'm not that familiar with day hikes from Tokyo, although most of the hikes in the Chichibu area are considered day trips (with an early start). Mt. Kumotori requires an overnight stay somewhere on the mountain. Mt. Ryokami can be done in a day, as can Mt. Bukou.

Mt. Tsukuba is an easy hike to the northeast. Nikko is not too far away, but Mt. Shirane will still have its winter coating of snow. Mt. Nantai should be ok, though.

Another option would be Mt. Asama near Karuizawa. This volcano erupted about 4 years ago, but they've lifted the climbing restriction as far as Mt. Maekake now. Also, it's probably your best chance to see Kamoshika (mountain serow) This would be difficult to do as a day trip unless you took the first shinkansen from Tokyo station.

Mt. Tanzawa to the south is a nice 2-day trip.
The night view of Tokyo from the top is spectacular, and the mountain is full of deer.

Unfortunately, there is not much info in English on the Web, and all the information I've gathered has been from Japanese web sites and maps.

Is this trip in early, mid, or late April? Late April is the start of Golden Week, so the trails will be more crowded during this holiday.

If you decide on a specific place, then let me know and I can give you more detailed info.

thank you for all the information!

I am not sure of the exact date just yet, but I will keep that holiday in mind to try to avoid. I will see what I can look up with the info you have given me so far. I will post any updates.

Thanks again!

Depends on your gear and how cold you want ... as people said there are a lot of alternatives if you don't have winter gear.
One thing you can do is look through our site for info... or even join - many events.
Best perhaps is the photo gallery and look at the same months in previous years for trip ideas or the event list.
